Service between Germany and the United States is governed by the Hague Convention of 15 November 1965 on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters (the “Hague Service Convention”). Both the Federal Republic of Germany (see Bundesgesetzblatt [BGBl.] 1977 II, p. 1452) and the United States have acceded to the Convention (see also the notice on the scope of application of the Hague Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters of 23 June 1980, BGBl. 1980 II, p. 907). Cross-border service between these two states is therefore governed by this Convention.
